That's relative phase, ie. having one channel out of phase relative to another. Relative phase problems are "relatively" (groan) common, as evidenced by your sub having a switch to flip phase! Pat was talking about absolute phase, ie. has the same phase been maintained all the way from the original recording to the reproduction on your speakers? It is questionable whether or not absolute phase is audible.
