Sorry for the confusion, Sean. I'll try and re-word this better.
At the moment I use a TCP/IP protocol cable to connect a hard drive to my Squeezebox in order that I can transmit a digital signal between them. From what I understand there is no jitter issue resultant with this type of connection. Now, if I wish to then send this digital signal to an external DAC I have use a SPDIF cable to connect the Squeezebox to the external DAC. Doing this causes unwanted jitter related issues as talked about.
