thanks so much guys, great input. here is my update:

i installed the current version of sbs on the readynas duo and the
performance is still very poor. it improved but still roughly 20 seconds
to respond to commands (artists, new music, albums etc.). i also learned
that it will not play wma lossless files and some of my earlier rips are
in that format. i suppose i can convert them to flac or wav but that is
just one more issue. andy also pointed out that the beta 7.5 version may
run faster but overall it seems underpowered. i may try it for kicks but
the setup i was using running sbs on my laptop and accessing files from
a seagate nas 110 is much more efficient even with the 2 wireless paths.
i also tried to install vortexbox on an old pc but i could not get it to
boot from the disk. i may pursue that just to see if i can get it to
work too. i commented earlier on this but gotta say it again...it amazes
me that the readynas duo is marketed as a device that will run sbs
because it really does not work well at all! certainly seems that
running it off the nas is a much better solution. i am very curious why
this is being suggested. the only thing i have heard is energy
conservation which can't be much. why else?

the last thing i have to try is getting another old machine running
with windows and using it headless for only running sbs, controlled with
my laptop, duet controller or droid. i am unclear on how to do it but
can figure it out. i am also unclear if a big hd can be installed or if
i must use an external usb hd. a project for another day (or 2).
