The Audiophile group often has some moderately heated discussions about
what people hear and why. Some of us point out that what you hear is
affected by other non-auditory factors. Here's a very instructive video
from an AES workshop. It should be mandatory viewing for anyone who
thinks that what they hear is solely down to the soundfield that reaches
their ears:

Of particular interest are the remarks by Jim Johnston (one the world's
foremost experts on perceptual encoding) between 1:05 and 5:15, and the
demonstration by Poppy Crum (a neuroscientist specialising in the
auditory system) between 5:30 and 8:00.
