Convair pilot here.... ;) I wouldn't rule out your sub so quickly. The HSU looks like a nice unit, and I think that careful attention to levels, XO frequency and phase (in addition to the ever important placement factor) make the difference between an ordinary BOOM BOOM sub, and one that actually sounds good. Experimentation is key, and it costs far less than replacing components time and again.
If you have problems getting things just so...I'd probably spend my money on room treatments (bass trapping).
