Interesting and absurd discussion, S/N ratio or dynamic is not rely the
key to good sound. If so nobody would have stuck to analogue sources
because they are vastly inferior.

I think the author shows 24 bit at end listening is a marketing hype
since you can’t rely use more than 20 bit S/N I the real word and 16
bit is more than enough to (100 db S/N an 96 db dynamics) present super
quality sound.

Don’t confuse 24 bit in the production stage with end usage. While
mixing 24 bit is crucial to obtain the full quality of the original
recording.

I also wonder what kind of music you are talking about. Modern
electronic music doesn’t even need that much quality to be enjoyable.
Of course for us who care its nice if you have a good set up to listen
to. But the major challenge is “classical” music in particular when it
comes to real dynamic. 40 db real music dynamic is more that usual, add
96 db dynamic usage since you always have passage going from tone to
silence via “reverberation” of the instrument and concert hall.

My point here is that most part of a concerto can be played at digital
-40 to -20 db with only a few peaks at full level 0. Sounding dame
good! I think this falsifies your hole argument. If you are sitting in
the middle of the loudest orchestra the sound level might be 115 db.
Home listening might be at 100 to 105 db peak.

The key is that you don’t listen to deadly SPL levels of 140 db. When
you gain the signal by listening to low level at “high” level you end
up with these deadly peaks, this is irrelevant since you are misusing
the DAC dynamic range. You could compare this to a reveres Dolby.
Instead of suppressing noise we amplify it to her it!
