I've done extensive listening and measurement tests of:
FLAC streamed as FLAC
FLAC streamed as WAV
WAV streamed as WAV
WAV streamed as FLAC

...and can find no measurable or audible difference. These tests were
with an SB3 (2 different ones) and a Touch.

However, there is a theoretical possibility that client-side processing
of FLAC MIGHT inject extra noise onto the spdif signal which MIGHT
impact certain DAC's. This would certainly be player-specific and could
not be taken as a general case conclusion such as "WAV always sounds
different to FLAC".

I do not believe anyone has yet been able to actually measure this
noise/jitter. I wish someone would...

I'm not disagreeing with Erik's findings, but I believe they may be
specific to the Receiver and/or his DAC (or similar DAC's).

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
