Note I do not have a transporter so all I can give is general
information. Yes, the chip has to be in serial mode. I do not know
which mode it is in for normal operation. 

Yes you are playing with CSN, CCLK, CDTI. IF they are used by the
transporter already it gets complicated because you will have to mux
your circuit into the existing lines. If they are not used (the
transporter uses parallel mode) its quite a bit easier. 

You will need three SPDT toggle switches, 2 74HC00 chips and six
resistors (say 1K to 10K range). The debounce circuit can be found on
this page:

Build it and hook up to Q or Qbar which ever gives a high voltage when
the switch is high. 

You will need to tap into 3.3V somewhere for this. 

Figuring out the sequence of bits to set the slow rolloff is left as an
exercise for the reader.
