I actually did the test the other day where I had the Touch analog outs
plugged into the main system and listened with and without the
headphones plugged into the Touch. BTW my headphones are 32 ohms. That
might be a significant factor.

The difference was rather striking. I was listening to a chorus
accompanied by a small orchestra. In several places a harp was playing.
With the headphone plugged in it was barely noticeable, it kind of
blended in with the rest of the instruments. With the headphones
unplugged the harp was perceived as a separate instrument rather than
just part of the rest. I could easily hear the decay of each note, the
subtlety in expression as the harpist played the instrument. The melody
being played by the harp was much easier to follow rather than being
subsumed by the rest of the instrumental music.

The decay of notes seemed to go on much longer in the unplugged state.
For example at one point the chorus and orchestra just stopped (grand
pause), in unplugged mode the reverberation in the room could be heard
for at least 6 seconds, in pugged state it was only about 2 seconds.
Its kind of astonishing to hear such a difference with the same
recording. Kind of an Energizer Bunny experience (do people outside the
US get that?)
