Yes the volume is digital(in 24 bits) so 75-100 it should be normally,
correct attenuation would be so that 100 volume is as loud you ever
want it to be, but not louder .
With rothwells ( I have a bunch of them) or other suitable attenuation
you will be using the digital volume control in it's sweet spot and if
you go  lower, well the volume will then be so low that you won't hear
the "loss of resolution" , but correct "gain staging" is a factor
between any audio device.

Many people reports excellent result getting rid of the preamp :)
Attenuators will also protect your speakers, as most squeezeboxes can
have very very rare bugs when they output something at full volume
suddenly usually horrible noise, beware.
