My suggestion to you would be to use an outboard DAC for the SB3. And
the DAC with an attenuator. I use a Caiman from Beresford, which give a
good result over the SB3 inboard DAC. Plus the attenuator, which allows
you to feed directly into a poweramp(s). Skipping the preamp really
gives you "bang for the buck", soundwise....  
The Beresford is definitely not expensive - and you may even look at
some of the previous models, which are still in stock. 
I also own a TEC 7510, which is a "clone" of the Beresford 7510. Also a
fine DAC. 
Allow some weeks to "burn in" of the DAC - and always leave it on. 

You can argue that there are many DAC's out there - I just haven't seen
the need to look further...
