Picked mine up last Friday and as I said it immediately wiped the floor
with the DacMagic.
I have had my older system set up as a temp measure whilst a bit of
room refurb is under way:
Nac72/Teddy/110 with Squeeze Duet.
Usual system is:
52/Supercap/135s with Squeeze Duet
Speakers Rega R5
The laptop in both cases is connected wirelessly to the router the
router via ehternet to the Squeeze control centre/Coax to Dac.
The older system has been in and out of the room like an old man [Me]
wanting the loo all the time.
The Rega Dac was switched on last Friday evening and as I said wiped
the floor with the Dacmagic making the Dacmagic sound like it was
playing MP3's on a very low bit rate.
I tried to leave the Squeeze in continous play but I had problems with
it stopping due to upgrades in software and keep disconnecting.
By Monday I was begining to think that the Rega was clouding over and
the bass was muffled and the sound was overall veiled; it was getting
ready for a return trip to the dealers.
By now I had mangaged to sort out the Squeeze and with no work in the
living room going on for a few days I let it run continously until
Thursday night. It was sounding more like it by now and on my numerous
switches to the Dacmagic it was no contest again the Rega was ahead on
all my test tracks and others.
My test tracks are a mixture of ripped CD's on my laptop to Spotify
Premium which is my preffered/frequent listening media. Who needs high
res? It's the music first and foremost.
This evening with the plasterer gone and a good cleanup I set up my
usual sytem of 52/Supercap/135's. Straight off the Rega is better and
the muffled/veiled sound has gone as it had last night with the old
setup. The DacMagic does sound shiite in comparrison. I hope this
continues as the Rega does make you want to groove your truffles. I
must add that I was relatively happy with the DacMagic before this but
I wondered what could be had for just a little more outlay, a lot as it
transpires.
I will postpone my trip back to the dealers for another week as I have
found with |Rega gear in the past it does take a while to run in and I
am not prepared to enter into a bun fight over this. My CD player in
the attic is a Rega Planet and the dealer told me on purchase that it
wouldn't sound like the one on demo in the shop when I got it home and
he was right, patience is required.
And for further information I hadn't really listened between Tuesday
and Thursday as it was running on Mute as it sounded that muffled it
didn't really encourage you but reminded me that I had maybe bought a
pup. So I hadn't got aclimatised to the muffled tones.
I will leave it on repeat on Mute overnight to see if the amps have any
bearing on this as they have been off for over a week but as I said it
was transformed on Thursday so things are looking good fingers
crossed.
PS I tried a direct USB connection from my laptop to the Dac when I was
having the muffled issue and it sounded much better. I will try this
again when it has all warmed up.
