Sure there are audiophile very similar to the one depicted in the
article and leave it to NPR to find the one female in the entire US. So
that's the first thing not very accurate - an overwhelming majority of
audiophiles are male and an overwhelming majority of those males are
white. second no self-respecting audiophile would describe their system
without using the names and model numbers of the equipment, including
the speakers and the wires! strike two!!

And the third strike has already been pointed out by Curt962 - by the
1980's Stereo Review and High Fidelity magazines had been replaced by
The Absolute Sound and Stereophile has the "sacred texts" of
audiophilia. Today the internet is quickly making many magazines almost
irrelevant as more and more audiophiles use various web sites forums
(like this one) to connect with each other directly.

A more interesting article would have been one about the amazing
headphone community that has sprung up online via sites like headfi.org
- many of today's young headphone enthusiasts will become the
audiophiles of tomorrow.
