I think that's kind of the point, and the watch analogy epitomizes it perfectly. If you want to buy these expensive audio cables as "audio jewelry", I, for one, have no quarrel with that. But when audio "journalists" claim that these components deliver clearly differentiated audio performance at multiples of ten and twenty and in some cases hundred of times what well engineered sensibly priced components such as, say, Rotel deliver, and make those claims without referencing anything other than the listener/critic's living room experiences, I think that such challenges are justified. If Levinson, Krell amplifiers or Pearl speaker cables are better, there ought to be measurements which correlate to psychoacoustic research that proves that. And there also needs to be proof that such components can also be made at the price charged by these hi end manufacturers. But if someone wants these components the same way someone want a Rolex Daytona or Patek Phillipe Calatrava, then of course the price is justified. But I, for one, do not consider stereo equipment to be a status symbol.
