I'm struggling to figure out this whole digital filtering
business...linear, minimum, apodizing, soft knee, etc...I've read some
of the technical explanations and discussions, but quite honestly 98%
of it goes right over my head. This is more intellectual curiousity
than anything else as I have rarely been able to actually hear
differences between the various filters, but, hey, maybe if I knew what
I was listening for, it might help.

The main thing I don't seem to find anywhere is any explanation of how
any of these things translate into the human (sorry all you dogs
reading this) sub-20khz audible world. For instance, how would pre
and/or post-ringing (whatever the heck those are) manifest themselves
in THE MUSIC----what I can (or can't) hear? What would the application
of x, y, or z filter do to prevent/allow some audible change in that
music?

I'm wondering if the absence of any "real/audible world" explanations
of this stuff is due to the fact that, essentially, there isn't
one---that every combination of gears and ears will manifest these
things in a different way? Or is it just marketing stuff by the chip
manufacturers to make us think we're getting some cool stuff, when it
really makes very little, if any, differences in anything other than
listening to equipment that 99.9% of us can't afford.

If anyone would care to offer up a "lay" explanation of, say, what I
should or shouldn't expect to hear from the five filters in my new Rega
dac or, alternatively, just point me to a non (or "light") technical
explanation of what filtering does and what things, in terms I can
understand, it's meant to solve, I would be most interested.

Gratefully,
