Here in my Jungle abode, one would think that they were relatively free from the EMI/RFI issues experienced elsewhere. Not so.
I just installed a power conditioner in my "travel" system and was a bit surprised that the sound DID change. Phil described it as "More relaxed" in his system. The change to me in my system sounded as if a tone control had been turned down a notch in the treble. Not as "bright" as before. Perhaps a bit more soothing on the ear. As is some sort of hash that you never noticed before had been suddenly removed. After a few days of listening, I dropped the level of my sub very slightly to get the tonal balance back to where I like it. Interesting. Looking around, I see no fewer than six (6) SMPS, 2 cell phones, a PC, and a wireless router in the same room. That's where this low-level grit, glare and hash comes from I'll wager. Measures taken to minimize the effects of this noise into the audio components via ferrites, and foil/braid shielding has merits. I suspect that when people hear HUGE <cough, choke> differences in power cables...they aren't hearing special wire, or cryo, or any of the other nonsense...they're hearing the shielding. Proven effective in decades of testing.
