There is nothing behind the curtain. There are "affordable" (non
ultra-high-end) DACs and players that perform so well that the most
significant distortions are those intrinsic to red book itself.

IMO red book is more than sufficient for a playback format. Heck, even
Spotify's Vorbis 320 streaming sounds good - it has nothing to do with
the typical SQ of internet radio (which sucks big time!)

Once you have decent line level equipment, look at loudspeakers and
acoustics for real improvements.
