How about simply *allowing* the Touch to play 192 kHz tracks by downsampling to 96 kHz [ (A + B) >> 1 is pretty quick ]? That way we could at least hear those 192 kHz tracks instead of getting an error message.
That should be cheap and easy to implement without requiring any major rewrites or hardware changes.
