After several day of listening at jive_alsa 55/spdif 51 (John Swenson's numbers), I've got to come down squarely in his camp. I've not experienced any degredation in the mid or low bass---in fact the opposite. Everything is enhanced and, in particular, there is now an enveloping quality to the soundstage that's pretty remarkable---as if somebody crept in and tweaked my speaker placement. Instrument and voice locations are significantly more clearly visualized and I've found that extra 5% in the musical detail----hearing keys on a bassoon being depressed/released in Mahler's 9th, breath inhalation/exhalations, the little swish of a conductors arm against body, etc.----that have charmed the hell out of me and made a number of pieces that much richer. Lowering the spdif numbers, for me, actually muddies things up. But, hey, one man's detail is another man's "too bright" I suppose and, as always, YMMV....everybody's systems have their own personalities! -- rgro Rick System information ------------------------ Main: PS Audio Quintet > Vortexbox > Touch (wired) via spdif coax > Rega DAC > LFD LE IV amp > VA Mozart Grands > REL Acoustics R305.
