I'm a bit puzzled by Michael's experience, myself having used my Transporter as a "direct to amp" component since I purchased it. I never felt the sound to be compromised in so doing.
As I understand it, the Transporter was designed to be State of the Art in all respects. PSU, Digital section, Analog section. It's low output impedance would allow it to drive long lengths of interconnect, and/or a low input impedance amplifier without compromise. It's a good box! All that aside, there could be arguments AGAINST using the Transporter "direct" to amplifier: * Audible artifacts from using large amounts of digital attenuation (ie: digital volume control). IMO, if you're using gobs of digital attenuation, you end up at the point where you can't hear the music anyway, so who the hell cares? * The potential for a data/software glitch to send a high level signal directly to your amplifier. This could have a bad ending. My feeling is that anytime you ADD a component to the chain, the best you could possibly have is the signal quality you have now...without that added component. Choose your pre/pro carefully should you decide to go this route.
