I read it has tube output stage for SPDIF! I don't understand how this
will improve the performance as a transport.

If the DAC rejects jitter it shouldn't make any difference.

Talking of which...

...and it rejects jitter.

I appreciate there are plenty of subjectivists on the forum, which is
fine. Subjectivists should stop reading here because, well, you're just
going to get angry(!)

If you're more on the objective side, I can recommend the Benchmark
HDR. What you get is a DAC which rejects jitter and a DAC and pre that
perform very well technically in terms of low distortion and neutrality
- approximately as good as anything else out there. Actually it is
overkill in terms of measured performance - but as a luxury item
compared to other audio luxury items the price is reasonable IMO.

What does it sound like? To me, it sounds fine.

Online I've read all sort of comments about the Benchmark. Some say it
is etched and some say it is dull. Some say the treble doesn't sparkle
and some say the treble sparkles too much. Some say it is mid-forward
and some say mid-recessed. Some say it is lean and cold. The most
recent review I read in a German pro magazine said it was a bit on the
warm and bassy side.

These people can't get their story straight. Are you getting the
picture - have you figured it out yet? This isn't really about the
Bencmark. ANY transparent and neutral device doesn't have a sound. You
will hear what the recording sounds like through the rest of your
system in your room. If that sounds cold/warm/musical/unmusical, that
means the rest of your system or your room, or both, are
cold/warm/musical/unmusical sounding. Don't go blaming the one thing in
the chain which is certifiably and measureably doing its job properly!
Madness.

Now, if somone is using a non-transparent, coloured source to correct
problems elsewhere in their system then I don't mind. Really, I don't!
What I DO mind is them inserting a transparent, neutral device into
their problem-ridden system and then criticising said device.
