MCR,
Why so many remasters sound so poor is clear to my mind: dynamic range
compression. IME the original CD releases tend to be less dynamically
compressed than the newer remasters. I tend to go for the original
release first and I will buy a remaster only if I can compare.

I don't have experience of Japanese remasters - perhaps they don't
suffer from this dynamic range problem, and so they sound better in
comparison to western remasters?

There are some exceptions of course - I am talking generally.
