My lay understanding is that it kills some background processes that
aren't needed.  This fits w/soundcheck's overall philosophy of keeping
the number of things the Touch is running to a minimum.

PuTTY is a terminal emulator...similar to WinSCP.  I use both.  For
normal stuff I usually use PuTTY as it's simpler.  For installing TT, I
have to use WinSCP as that allows me to see/use directory structures
(which PuTTY does not) on both my Windows PC and the Touch.
