My lay understanding is that it kills some background processes that aren't needed. This fits w/soundcheck's overall philosophy of keeping the number of things the Touch is running to a minimum. PuTTY is a terminal emulator...similar to WinSCP. I use both. For normal stuff I usually use PuTTY as it's simpler.
