An excellent suggestion.  It's certainly possible if the op is using
dhcp (which I suspect he is) on his router, that with the switching to
ethernet, factory resets, etc. that the dhcp server assigned the Touch
a different ip than what it originally had before all the changes. 
That would certainly explain the difficulties.
