I don't know much about how it should have sounded, as it is a purcussive instrument I would imagine it should be fairly prominent as it is setting the time for the piece, it's not like it's trying to create a mood in which case a softer sound would be better. perhaps more telling is how real does the voice at the start sound ? the rest of the instruments sound gorgeous, so something must be right.
