Hear, hear! I too am getting cautiously optimistic that 'loudness wars'
could hopefully already be behind us:)

I agree with you, and my concern was not in the analog-vs-digital
realm. I was more commenting on the old school production vs. new
school production. In my experience, many of the old school recordings
were not recorded 'hot'. The engineers were usually recording at lower
volumes, which left plenty of headroom for post-production dicking
around (read: manipulation). I have a hunch that many of the new school
tracks have been recorded 'hot', leaving little or no headroom for
post-prod manipulation. Add to that the nasty habit of mangling the
signal with those horrendous compression boxes that people nowadays
like to insert in-between the microphones and the recording devices,
and you end up with a completely brickwalled recording.
