Anyone who has ever assembled a good working hi fi system is no doubt aware that such system involves many moving parts. In addition to that, there are seemingly endless combinations, recombinations and permutations of various components, audio accessories, room treatments etc. Given such an insanely complex system, it is perplexing to learn that many audiophile experts remain insistent that all this wild variability matters very little. Often we read how dismissive experts are regarding the hypothesis that any change in the configuration could ever possibly effect the change in the resultant sound. For the most part, any change to the audio chain is brushed away as being irrelevant, of no consequences whatsoever.
I personally find that very strange. I know that in any other system I've ever been involved with, variability matters the most, and we're always advised to keep variability at the minimum. Be it in the analog photography studio, or in the beer making facility, or anywhere else, variability is taken seriously, and it's often suggested that we make all attempts to manage it, reduce it, if not completely eliminate it. Everywhere else, save for the audio reproduction. Why is it then that audio experts tend to consider the inevitable variability in the audio chain as something not worth looking into? Why is it that all these knowledgeable people are always adamant that, by changing something in your audio system, you cannot possibly produce a change in the resulting sound? This, and many other audio forums, are chock full of discussion threads that amply illustrate this disdain for any possibility that variability in the source components could ever elicit any change in the resulting sound. From armies of 'experts' who are foaming at the mouth how it is not possible that a change in digital transport could ever be affecting the sound, to those who claim that it is impossible to detect any change in the sound even if we are to replace a high end power amplifier with a crappy low end amplifier. Something strikes me as being phenomenally odd in this picture, so I'd be curious to hear other people's take on this. Or, if not that, I though it would be a lot of fun to read how people get clued in that this is nothing but mere sophisticated trolling. Isn't it fun when people say that? How many times do you think will it take before people get tired of sniffing out trolls? Or are they that idiotic that they'll never get tired? Meagre intelligence syndrome, per chance?
