One important aspect of this massive equation that everyone seems to miss is that music reproduction is, more than anything else, a craft. Yes, this craft is based on engineering and yes, its ultimate goal is the achievement of pure art, such as unencumbered music played back in its full perfection. But what lies in between these two extremes (i.e. engineering and art) is a mere craft. When I'm dicking around with configuring my hi fi, I consider myself a craftsman. Meaning, I know a tiny little about the founding engineering principles behind it (enough to be dangerous), and also I possess enough of an aesthetic criterion to allow me to strive toward artistic perfection. But at the end of the day, it's nothing but craft. And as we know, craft is an extremely variable enterprise, where each and every craftsperson introduces his or her own spin on things. This is why it's kind of pointless to argue about certain things that each and every one on this forum brings to the table.
