To answer the original question... it depends entirely on what the speaker designer was aiming to achieve. There is no "right" or "wrong" here; some speakers are designed to try and offer "pinpoint imaging", others aim for a more diffuse soundfield. Some are just odd (Bose, Sonabs, Linn 'Bariks etc)
