Not sure what's so confusing about my statement. The vast majority of CD players on the market have the DAC integrated into a one-box unit. (I believe the audiophiles refer to the drive-only units as "transports".) Plenty of opportunity for the manufacturer to tweak things to achieve the sonic signature they think will better appeal to buyers.
