Good question. My first reaction is "no, how could there be...too much trouble". But I recall (not sure where I read this) that some of the high bitrate lossy streaming on Spotify or MOG had some sort of additional "compression" applied that made it sound a bit different from similar high bitrate mp3 ripped from own CD. But even in this case, I think this "compression" (or whatever it is) is something applied to the entire stream (and NOT differently mastered or differently treated individual albums). p.s. You raise an important point on the original question. If the OP's local FLAC has (or doesn't have) replaygain tags and the streamed FLAC does (or doesn't) or even if the RG tag values are different between the two, the two songs could sound different in terms of volume. And we know from controlled experiments that often slight differences in volume are interpreted as differences in SOUND QUALITY (rather than differences in volume). *Location 1:* VortexBox 4TB (2.2) > LMS 7.8 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Location 2:* VBA 3TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Touch > Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Office:* Win7(64) > LMS 7.8 > SqueezePlay *Spares:* VBA 4TB, SB3, Touch (3), Radio (3), CONTROLLER *Controllers:* iPhone4S (iPeng), iPad2 (iPengHD & SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win7(64) laptop Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Tagging - mp3tag, Spotify ------------------------------------------------------------------------ garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100461 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
