Correct, standard USB should not be longer than about 15-20 feet. An inexpensive active USB extender like the one I wrote about can connect to my TEAC UD-501 at full USB2 speeds for DSD128 and 24/192+ - I've tried up to 50 feet with good Cat 5e cable as in the description with no noticeable audio degradation.
