I have some other view meanwhile. I doubt it is bad what happened here. Beck may have collected this music over a while and gave it for mastering. I have no doubt this material is mixed at 24/96 and so this is a valid "Studio Master" - people ask for it, people get it.
I think there are much bigger rip-offs the other way around when the versions that sell as Studio Master sound different to the 16/44.1 version by purpose.
