I do think it's a bit of a culture/future shock when cd was released . We where simply used to how the vinyl sounded and vinyl is not really the same as good analog ( reel to,reel tape is ) . And maybe just maybe there was something to " digital ready " after al ;) some equipment migth not have been able to handle it .
The following would be interesting to do . Pop in some really old cd in your current system does it still sound horrible .
