We trust it to tell us what we subjectively prefer, but science (and
experience) has thought us not to trust it as an absolute, repeatable
reference.

For some, the enjoyment is purely in the subjective experiencing of
music. Others base their hobby (and enjoyment of it) on actual technical
understanding. 

Some people enjoy the magic of a technical device without any need to
know what is inside the black box. Others enjoy understanding what is
inside, and how it works.
