What everybody has already said - DACs tend to be 24 bit by default these days, but I have not come across any commercial recordings that would use more than a 16-bit range (even if the recording is 24 bits, it won't gain you anything if the extra 8 bits are simply noise). For digital volume control, the extra bits are an advantage.
