Because a decent cable will have excellent screening to ensure that you
don't get interference and have decent plugs that give a good connection
to your kit. Bell wire for speakers and a boot lace for an interconnect
will work but there are noticeable improvements in sound quality from
spending £30 for a properly designed cable. Above that you can still get
improvements but they are less black and white. As I said I have bought
secondhand cables on hifi fora. Their new price was >> £100. I paid
nearer  £70 and I can hear the difference.
