The key here is if they define "CD Quality" as hi-bitrate MP3 (256k+) or an uncompressed CD. The article doesn't say (perhaps the study does).
I can differentiate between the two (although most of the time for relaxed music listening I may not care much about the difference). As to the same recording in 16/44 vs 24/192... nah. Maybe it's because my testing was limited to 3 albums (none of which were originally mastered at 24/192, but rather in analog), but I doubt it, and honestly they sound amazing the way it is.
