I've used audit software since 1975 (Audex, from ex Big 5 Arthur Andersen), then CARS, then EDP AUDITOR, then ACL and then IDEA, and I've seen that especially the latest two, do NOT require programming skills as a requisite. Else, they would not be in high use by large CPA firms or by non IT-specialized auditors. What auditors DO need FIRST is to have quite well defined their audit objectives and then see what the tool can do for them. Working the other way around is to put the cart in front of the horses... or so they say, IMHO.

Just remember it is a programming tool nothing more and nothing less, if
nobody has a talent for programming, it is a waste of time and money.
 Find out first if anyone on your staff has a knack for writing
software, many people can not do it.
