Could someone help me with a question concerning responsibility for gathering I-9 
information?  If a construction contractor hires its employees from a local union hall 
who has the responsibility to gather and retain I-9 information.  Can the contractor 
rely on the fact that the union has the information, or must the employer request 
copies of the I-9 form from the union for each employee it hires.  I posed this 
question to INS and they sent me a canned reply about independent contractors that did 
not apply to the situation at all.  Thanks for your help
