I have been amazed by how much benefit can be derived from the internet. Since the
beginning of the year I have done a lot of research on the internet on various issues.
The audinet website has been extremely handy. I have downloaded many programmes which
have made my work much easier.

With the internet you save a lot of time. You have access to the work of experts at no
cost to yourself. There is a lot of material exquisitely prepared by academics and
non-academics alike.

When I did an audit of the Disaster Recovery Planning, I got to read a lot of material
from the internet. By the time I started the actual audit I had a good idea of this
particular area which relatively new to me. The search engines are of great help
though I mainly use just 2, Yahoo and Google. The great thing about these search
engines is that you can use the advanced search facility to get exactly what you are
looking for using the search tools to specify Age, type and other criteria of
information required. Say for instance you want a PowerPoint presentation with the
words "Internal Audit and Corporate Governance" in the document title, you can get
exactly that.

Over the weekend I gave a presentation on Internal Audit. I had downloaded a
presentation from the website of the Institute of Internal Audit entitled Adding Value
Across the Board. In addition to this I was able to download other PowerPoint
presentations on Internal Audit and related issues such as Corporate Governance, Risk
Management and developments in the Accounting Profession. I know that on my own I
could not have come up with such a presentation!

I also use the internet to keep abreast of developments in the Corporate world as well
as academic developments in the accounting world. Accounting and auditing standards
are available for download and are always updated on the relevant websites. I was able
to follow such events as the fall of Enron, WorldCom and others in great detail
thanks to the internet. I have no doubt that Internal Audit is now being seen in a
different light as a result of various developments in the world over the past year.
The internet enables one to learn something new everyday...Internal auditors need to
be aware of what is happening all the time!

Hi all!

Today I am in Harrisburg, PA teaching a course on the
above subject. In order to demonstrate how discussion
lists can be used I thought I would send a message and
ask for feedback from subscribers on how you are using
the Internet in your audit department.

Please share one way you are doing this so the class
can see the benefits!

Thanks,

Jim Kaplan
