I think it is an aufs bug.
Will you tell me these things?
- what is a filesystem type of /REDWALL/union_branches/etc?
- which directory you executed remount in (Current Working Directory),
to delete /CHANGES/etc?

--> i'll try removing blkid.tab from the RO Branch and maybe symlinking
it to /dev/null

- do you mean you have blkid.tab in your RO branch?
I will send a debug print patch next week if you will apply it and debug
this bug.
