But your report which says old aufs doesn't work for ubuntu reminds me
one thing. I have experienced an incompatibility around ubuntu edgy
kernel. The kernel calls itself as linux-2.6.17, but actually a part of
it, the kernel internal function signature/interface, has anticipated
2.6.18, and it made several conditions(below) in aufs source useless.

...

I am afraid this trouble might come again in your ubuntu kernel. Did you
comple ubuntu's "aufs-source" package cleanly?
Anyway, I will check ubuntu source files.
