I'm using NFSv4 for FAI Debian installations since 2 years (just with
tmpfs) with an almost ancient 2.6.17 kernel on Debian Sarge.

In my development branch, FAI started to work with aufs / unionfs in
October 07 (maybe you remember the mails I've sent in September,
regarding NFSv4 support on 2.6.23)

So it's working reliable, but it took quite some time to get it running
as an NFSroot.
