Then will you try strace smbd?
For example, insert 'strace' in your /etc/inetd.conf
or execute strace -p `pidof smbd` (if your smbd is only one).
I am not sure which command is best for your environment. But it is
important to make Samba's behaviour clear.

And what version of samba are you using? Where can I get the source
code of it? If your distribution modifies it, I need to know all of it.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about samba.
If you share ext2 via samba and your smb client can rename on it, then
aufs may need to support something. But I am not sure.
