Well, Ubuntu has one of the best aufs support available today.

Ubuntu 8.04 ships with precompiled aufs modules and kernels patched with
lhash and other patches needed for aufs.

Ubuntu 8.04 allows the user to boot the standard installation disk (the
live disk) with aufs instead of unionfs, by using the union=aufs option.

Let's see if Ubuntu 8.10 switches to aufs as the default.

Well, I support Debian & Ubuntu kernels (although the latter one is more
maintained by the kernel team).

Debian has prebuilt aufs modules for the following 12 architectures:
 alpha
 amd64
 arm
 armel
 hppa
 i386 (including Xen)
 ia64
 mips
 mipsel
 powerpc (including powerpc64)
 s390
 sparc (including sparc64)

See http://packages.debian.org/aufs-modules-2.6.24 for more information
about aufs modules for kernel 2.6.24 in Debian. This also includes
various flavors of kernels.

Support for armel (and arm) may need to be dropped for kernel 2.6.25, as
these architectures do not support cmpxchg, which is needed for sysaufs
(which can not be disabled anymore).

Maybe aufs should switch to a service not sponsored by Microsoft?
