I don't understand this think,
It's proven that Debian Live uses live-initramfs and a standard Debian kernel 
with aufs and squashfs to start a diskless computer,
The only reason to build custom kernels is to include some functions not 
supported by Debian, like squashfs + lzma.
(and even can be that lzma will compile as a module of an standard kernel)
