Ah crap... /me blushed, yeah, I did indeed mean nfsevers=3 ...I looked 
it up in /usr/src/linux/fs/nfs/nfsroot.c

I'm struggling to get an cockeyed setup going:

LiveCD -- aufs mount /tftproot/nfsroot/x86_64 -- NFSv3 <--> diskless 
node -- mount NFSroot -- aufs applied to /etc /var /tmp ....boot

I've done this before with unionfs in the past but the hard part is that 
I am doing this from a liveCD, not a true HDD, which is an extra AuFS 
layer before getting onto the net via NFS...
