The alternative is using a decent distro kernel, which do catch up xen all the time, but you didn't name the platform, you're talking about.. If you rely on aufs{,2} in any way, you should strongly consider this, as the kernel guys are heavily biased, when it comes to stacked filesystems. As a result, Junjiro's predominant aufs2 will not enter mainline kernel any time soon, while on the other hand their own approach on this topic is ages away. Seriously.
