We have an OMAP3 1GHz + SD card + ext3 + squashfs + aufs + 2.6.32 +
android Gingerbread and it works perfectly well. Everything is plain for
squashfs/aufs. BTW, a plain kernel for Android doesn't exist! Android
needs a bunch of patches, some of their effects might be unpredictable
from my experience. I would recommend that you try first with another
OS, aka a plain and really standard Linux to figure out if it's not
Android that is causing some problems,
